Look, I absolutely adore the McElroys and the Sawbones podcast. The writing, illustration, and overall art direction of the book are wonderful, and I'm thrilled to finally have their book. That said, it seems like the publisher really let them down here. Their solution to a misprint was to tear out a bunch of pages and then glue two of them together rather than to reprint with the correct page numbers. There's a glaring grammatical error on the very first page, and the rest of the book is full of typos. Between the bad editing job and the poor solution to a printing error, I now look down at this book on my table and feel like I paid for a defective copy of an otherwise brilliant work.On recent podcasts, Justin made it sound like the recent acquisition of Weldon Owen left them abandoned and doing a lot of the work themselves. It's really disappointing that the book suffered as a result of the publisher.

I think the book is amazing and I have been looking forward to it. I really enjoy the podcast and they dynamic between Justin and Sydnee. delivery service leaves a lot to be desired. After multiple complaints about packages tossed over the fence into mud etc. and left by the street they brought stuff to the porch for several deliveries but for this one they screwed up again. Its like they have something against books or things I'm really looking forward to and they're tossing again instead of bringing stuff up to my door. See picture
Yes! I preordered this book the moment Justin and Sydnee announced it on Sawbones. I’ve been listening to the podcast for years, and knew I would love the book, although I worried it might be a little repetitive for people who had listened to every episode. This book covers a lot of the standard Sawbones material featured in the podcast (trepanation, cholera, humors, Pliny the Elder) and builds off of these topics, providing additional history and fun trivia. Additionally, both Justin and Sydnee’s voices shine through their words, and their chemistry is Wonderful! (oh, wrong McElroys...) even in the written word, and Teylor’s illistrations are amazing—from the cutesy cartoons of our hosts/authors to the old fashioned sketches and diagrams, they complement the book perfectly. This book is a lot of fun and I am so proud of Justin, Sydnee, and Teylor’s work.
Here is an update I saw from the publisher on pages 206-211
“While printing The Sawbones Book, we noticed that several pages had been included erroneously within the book.
Rather than reprint the book and greatly delay the release date, Weldon Owen removed these erroneous pages (which accounts for a jump in page numbers just before the book's end, no content is missing). Unfortunately, correcting this error has delayed some shipments of the book to retailers.
We are doing everything in our power to fulfill the orders. We're grateful for your patience during this time.”
Oofa doofa, for fans only. This thing clearly didnt get any attention from its publisher, and if I gave it to someone unfamiliar with the show they'd be appalled. It reads like a self-published book, full of typos and layout issues. Sourcing is non-existant. The illustrations/photos are largely uncredited historical illustrations from wikipedia and google image search, with Teylor providing a smattering of original work throughout. Just have your friends listen to the podcast instead, this is a pretty shabby representation of the charm, humor and intelligence the creators typically demonstrate in their show. This is a missed opportunity, they and their potential audience deserved better.
The content of this book is great. Sydnee and Justin's contrasting takes on Kellogg was one of the funniest things I've ever read, and Teylor's art is wonderful. But I had bought this book to give to my brother, a doctor, as a Christmas gift, and I just can't do it - not because the book is so good and I want to keep it for myself (my original fear), but because it is so obviously unfinished that it feels insulting.
To call the writing a "rough draft" is generous. Almost every page contains misspellings, grammatical errors, duplicate words, page placeholders, and other mistakes. The editor and publisher dropped the ball so badly that I felt a sense of dread with each page I read, waiting for the next example of how little attention was given to cleaning up and editing the writing. There wasn't a need for the different parts, either - the stories often didn't seem to fit well in the categories they were assigned to. Finally, and most atrocious of all, there are eight pages at the end that are simply missing - the publisher just GLUED TOGETHER the backs of pages 205 to 212.
If these were any other content creators besides the McElroys, there is no way this book would have such a high rating. I understand that folks are enthusiastic to support them - I am too - but such a high rating is extremely dishonest because the construction and editing of the book is so unforgivably flawed. I can't believe someone actually made the decision to ship out the books in this state. It feels like they're taking advantage of the fans' willingness to forgive the creators, and that is bad business.
To Weldon Owen, the publisher You ought to be ashamed. I am going to ask for my money back.
To the McElroys Hold your publisher accountable. You KNOW that the fans would have forgiven a delay if it meant receiving a completed and polished product. I hope the next printing is better.
