Parker Mitchell misses Avery Tate more and more every day. Six months ago she left his employment and his life because their relationship became more personal and he couldn’t wholeheartedly commit to her. His first love, Jenna, was murdered several years ago and he hasn’t been able to move on in his personal life. Her killer was never caught and Parker feels he failed to protect her. He cares for Avery, but knows she needs someone who can give her 100%. Out of the blue she calls him, needing his expertise as a crime scene processor. Everyone in the business knows he is the best and as Avery used to work as his crime scene photographer, she knows it too. Parker hopes Avery is back in his life for a lot longer than this case as he spends more and more time with her, trying to help her.
Avery Tate’s best friend, Skylar, is missing. She posed for a bizarre photograph for a gallery showing, but evidence in the photograph leads Avery to think Skylar is dead. She calls the best in the business to come look at the photograph and Skylar’s trailer to process them. The best being the man she has given her heart to, Parker Mitchell. She and Skylar grew up together and had a past riddled with alcohol, drugs and petty crime, but eight years ago Avery became a Christian and has never looked back. She totally turned her life around. Unfortunately, Skylar has not. Avery desperately wants to find out where Skylar is and try again to get her out of her seedy lifestyle. Parker and Avery embark on an investigation with the help of Charm City Investigations, which includes their friends Griffin, Finlay, Kate, Tanner and Declan. Their search leads them after an obsessed man, his girlfriend, some college kids who were in Skylar’s trailer as well as some other people from Avery’s past.
While this story definitely had moments of tension and suspense, I felt that Declan and Tanner were too much in the story. They took the focus sometimes off of Avery and Parker. I know the third book in the series is to focus on Declan and Tanner, but having them appear so often in this story dimmed my enjoyment somewhat. I was glad to see Griffin and Finlay make appearances in the story, and since their story was told in book one, I was okay with them being in the story. I did really like how Avery and Parker both prayed and kept each other accountable in their relationship with God. God was definitely a part in their relationship, drawing them together and strengthening them. I look forward to book three being released in October 2017 titled, Blind Spot. Also, check out Dani’s other great series set in Alaska called Alaskan Courage.

Still Life Chesapeake Valor Dani Pettrey 9780764212956 Books Reviews

Another great mystery with a detailed story, very well written. .I think it would be difficult to read this book without reading the first book in the series, since many of the characters were continued. I would recommend this book to anyone.
If you love mysteries and intrigue, interlaced with true love stories that are Christian friendly, you will love this series. And this author. It's such a blessing not having to worry about the possibility of reading a good mystery and not have to stop and get rid of it because it takes you to situations and/or characters that make you uncomfortable as a Christian. And authors like this write books that aren't just a good mystery read, with good love stories, they are also good at showing the love and grace of our Father, and how He loves and moves in the lives of people just like us - imperfect, lost, and who, in so many ways, fall short of His glory. Yet His grace is sufficient.
I'm not really a fan of mystery books, to be honest, but there's just something about Dani Pettrey's books, specially the Chesapeake Valor series, that makes them impossible to put down!!
My favorite thing is by far the characters' interaction in this series!! It's witty and entertaining, at the same time that it's clearly exposed how sacrificially and profoundly they care for each other and how dedicated they are to bring justice through their jobs.
"Still Life" is a little bit more grotesque and darker than the first one. The pace is perfect and the author blows me away with how much research she has done about investigators' lives.

Something else that I have been adoring about this series is that we get a glimpse of the other character's lives and involvements in other investigations as well. I can't wait until October to see mister serious Declan Grey's world be thrown together with the mysterious Tanner Shaw.
The first book in a series often contains many characters. And that may seem confusing. However, I love it when the author features a different set of the characters in each subsequent book. By the end of the series, you feel like you know than all quite well. In "Cold Shot", Griffin and Finley are featured. They also appear in "Still Life", and you know them all ready. In "Still Life", we learn the story of Parker and Avery. This story has a lot of twists and turns. Just when you think you know what happened, the author fools you again. The ending was a surprise, but quite plausible.

I look forward to the next book, "Blind Spot", when we learn the story of Declan and Tanner. I'm sure it will be just as exciting as the other two.
I think it has a good plot but it moves somewhat slowly at the beginning . Also, if you have not read the first book in the series, you will be lost (as I am). I am somewhat surprised because most authors, when writing a series, will find a way to help readers know the characters and how they relate to each other from the prior book(s). This book assumes that you've already read the first book and that you already understand the relationships and history of the characters. As a result, it is a bit hard to follow or understand the connections.
Such a pleasure to read books about people of faith and high character values without crude language and sex scenes.
The critical reviews about too many main characters and too many subplots were alas all too true. The male heroes all seem to be interchangeable and I was very confused between the sniper/detective/Ranger Griffin and the FBI Agent Declan and the Crime Scene expert Parker.
The subplot cold case about Jenna (Griffin's sister and Parker's first love) and the other cold case subplot about Kate's missing boyfriend Luke were just too much, let alone a terrorist plot and suicide bomber. Still it would make the series finale more interesting if Luke is undercover black ops to distinguish him from the other guys.
Overall a character guide explaining the major characters would've been helpful.
